Words Have Consequences

During last May’s “rapture” alert here in Richmond and around the world, the clergy here at Saint Alban’s addressed the dangers of so-called end-times prophecies. Indeed, such prognostication about Our Lord’s return is specifically proscribed in the Gospels by Christ himself.  However, words have consequences.

Bob Unruh of World Net Daily reports that Harold “Second Coming” Camping got more than he bargained for with his prediction that Jesus Christ would return to Earth to “rapture” his followers to heaven on May 21.  You will recall that Camping, 89, of Oakland, Calif.-based Family Radio, prognosticated that mankind had run out of time, and the Creator of the universe would arrive on that Saturday. Now, the executive director of a ministry that works with the persecuted church in the northern reaches of Vietnam says that the “prophecy” preacher apparently cost the lives of many tribal Hmong people who believed it.

The horrific aftermath of the unfulfilled prophecy was reported by James Jacob Prasch, a key leader of Moriel Ministries. Prasch routinely travels and meets with members of the Christian body worldwide. A recent trip took him to Vietnam, where a large number of the Hmong Central Highland  tribal peoples known as Montagnards are Christian. These folks apparently had heard of Camping’s prophecy and not having sophisticated methods for evaluating its validity, took it literally, he explained.

The result, for many, was death, Prasch reported in an email to supporters.  After listening to a translation of Camping’s prediction some 7,000 Montagnards gathered on a mountain praising God their suffering at the hands of the communist regime was about to end because Jesus was returning that day in May to establish a new kingdom.  The police and military police slaughtered many of them at gunpoint – beheading two pastors. Others were arrested, and so many were shot dead that they were buried in mass graves bulldozed over.

Prasch reported that he spoke to a secret meeting of Hmong pastors to explain to them “false prophets and false teachers.” “Due to a combination of poverty, ignorance and persecution these poor Christians don’t understand much so they believed Camping’s shortwave broadcast which is how most get their teaching,” he said.  “These people already suffering for their faith in Jesus had it bad enough. They are not like the undiscerning whackos in the West who should have known Camping was a crackpot and a proven false prophet and false teacher,” Prasch reported. “This is a persecuted church who just had no means to know any different. This is why … I warn so much about false teachers and false prophets.”

World Net Daily’s attempt request of Family Radio for comment predictably did not generate a response.

In a related incident, when Camping’s predicted rapture did not occur, International Business Times reported that Ms. Lyn Benedetto of Antelope Valley, Calif., slit the wrist and throat of her two daughters and then slit her own to prevent them from going through the “Tribulation” on May 21.  Thanks be to God that a  neighbor summoned an ambulance in time for them to be hospitalized.

Upon hearing the story, Camping was quoted as saying, “Murdering is terrible. It is contrary to everything the Bible teaches. That would have been a horrible thing if she has done that. That will make me weep. That will fill me with sorrow that she would do that. The Bible teaches that we are to save life, not kill. If it is going to be death, leave it to God. God knows who He wants to kill and make alive. That is His business, not our business.”

Asked if he would take responsibility for such incidents, Camping, of course, said no.  “I don’t have any responsibility. I can’t be responsible for anybody’s lives,” he explained. “I am only teaching the Bible. I am not teaching what I believe, as if I am the authority. I am just simply teaching what the Bible says. And I don’t have spiritual rule over anybody.”

You bet, Harold.  A world-wide radio ministry, billboards up and down I-95 among other locales, and a whole passel of media appearances and you aren’t holding yourself out as an authority.  Owning up to responsibility for one’s actions is a Christian imperative.

Of course, Camping’s prediction that Jesus would return May 21 was not the first time he made a false prophecy. He previously forecast Christ’s return in 1994.  In the aftermath of his little “error”, Camping has adjusted his prediction for the end of the world to Oct. 21 of this year.

Just a couple of thoughts from the 25th Chapter of the Gospel of St. Matthew.  ”And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.” “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” (v. 36)

This episode illustrates a number of points, but, two chiefly come to mind.  First, there is a danger in Bible prophecy.  If you hear such teachings, you are well served to ignore them as our Lord directs.  You may even wish to direct so-called prophets to that 25th chapter of St. Matthew, although such folks are not typically swayed by actual Scripture, preferring, instead, their own “interpretations”.  As well, this incredibly sad episode tells us that words have consequences and, especially those of us involved in Christian teaching, Bible study or apologetic need to “set a coal upon our lips” before speaking.  Those yearning for the true faith are listening, and woe unto us if we lead others astray.

Summer Reading

Those who variously enjoy mysteries, Arthurian legend, the works of the Inklings, and historical pieces will want to include Looking for the King. It is 1940, and the Second World War has just begun.  American Tom McCord, a 23-year-old aspiring doctoral candidate, is in England researching the historical evidence for the legendary King Arthur. There he meets Laura Hartman, a fellow American staying with her aunt in Oxford, and the two of them team up for an even more ambitious and dangerous quest.

Aided by the Inklings-that illustrious circle of scholars and writers made famous by its two most prolific members, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as the lesser-read Charles Williams-Tom and Laura begin to suspect that the fabled Spear of Destiny, the lance that pierced the side of Christ on the cross, is hidden somewhere in England.

Tom discovers that Laura has been having mysterious dreams, which seem to be related to the subject of his research, and, though doubtful of her visions, he hires her as an assistant. Heeding the insights and advice of the Inklings, while becoming aware of being shadowed by powerful and secretive foes who would claim the spear as their own, Tom and Laura end up on a thrilling treasure hunt that crisscrosses the English countryside and leads beyond a search for the elusive relics of Camelot into the depths of the human heart and soul. Weaving his fast-paced narrative with conversation based on the works of the Inklings, author David Downing offers a vivid portrait of Oxford and draws a welcome glimpse into the personalities and ideas of Lewis and Tolkien, while never losing sight of his action-packed adventure story and its two very appealing main characters.

You will feel that you actually have met Lewis, Tolkien and Williams and shared a story with them.  There are themes of chivalry and faith inter-woven into the tale, and the level of dialogue and narrative are well-above that of the mass market pot boiler.  You also won’t have to worry about offensive language, vivid sexual imagery or anyone wielding a chainsaw.  It is a good bet for the beach, poolside or an armchair in air-conditioned comfort.   A word of warning, though.  Once you start this book you won’t want to put it down until the finale!

Church Behavior

Now and again I am asked about “proper” behavior in Church.  There is, I believe, a  balance between the respect necessary in attendance at the Liturgy and the potential for an impression of “stuffiness” that can result in “negative evangelism.”   I’d like to share some thoughts this morning from the priest’s perspective on church behavior. These are not to meant as inclusive, and if you have questions, please ask.

Church is a special place of God’s presence on earth.  We should behave ourselves reverently in church, so as not to offend the dignity of the sacred place and not to disrespect our Lord and bring condemnation on ourselves.

We  should arrive at least  5-10 minutes before the service begins. On entering a church, men are to remove their headwear. We  must be dressed appropriately and neatly. We should not speak loudly or chew the gum in church. We should not wander around needlessly in the sanctuary.

Any conversation should be restricted to the very minimum as people are praying in preparation for the liturgy. You can greet your acquaintances briefly and quietly but postpone talking to them until after services are concluded.

If you come to church with children you must prevent them from running and misbehaving. A crying child is the voice of the future of the Church, and we should not worry over a bit of noise.  However, if a crying child cannot be calmed down, they should be taken out of church by the parent until they have quieted.

If all the praying people kneel, you should join them. Likewise, if they stand, please stand.  No walking or talking is allowed during Gospel, as well as during the Sermon and particularly during the Eucharistic Canon (from “The Offertory” to the “Administration”) unless one has an urgent need to leave the church for health reasons. If one is sufficiently late so as to have missed the Gospel reading, they should refrain from Communion and ask a blessing at the Communion rail.

Please do not smoke on a church-porch, but, if you must, please do so in the parking lot or in your own vehicle.

Other than helper dogs or assistance dogs in training, animals or birds are not allowed in church.

One may correct a fellow parishioner only in a soft and delicate manner. It would be better not to make any remarks unless a person behaves like an “hooligan”. The ushers are the usual persons to address unruly behavior.

Finally we should stay in church till the end of service. You may, of course, leave earlier due to bad health condition or if a very serious matter requires it.

“We are to regard existence as a raid or great adventure; it is to be judged, therefore, not by what calamities it encounters, but by what flag it follows and what high town it assaults. The most dangerous thing in the world is to be alive; one is always in danger of one’s life. But anyone who shrinks from that is a traitor to the great scheme and experiment of being.”–G.K. Chesterton

Memorial Day Prayers

Today, we remember all who have served our nation, especially those who have given their lives in the service of their country.  Saint Alban’s salutes her veterans and their families, as well as all of our military wherever serving, most importantly those who go in danger or harm’s way.  Please offer special intentions today for the families of our deployed soldiers, sailors and airmen, as well as for the wounded and their swift recovery.

Memorial Days.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, in whose hands are the living and the dead; We give thee thanks for all those thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country. Grant to them thy mercy and the light of thy presence, that the good work which thou hast begun in them may be perfected; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen.

In Time of War and Tumults.

ALMIGHTY God, the supreme Governor of all things, whose power no creature is able to resist, to whom it belongeth justly to punish sinners, and to be merciful to those who truly repent; Save and deliver us, we humbly beseech thee, from the hands of our enemies; that we, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore from all perils, to glorify thee, who art the only giver of all victory; through the merits of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

There will be a Mass for the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011  at Saint Alban’s.

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.Amen.

Military News

CH (COL) Charles Nalls has been awarded the Master Military Emergency Management Specialist qualification. Students must complete advanced emergency management practical assignments, various Train-the-Trainer certifications and related advanced training programs. The Master MEMS badge also involves a comprehensive MEMS Academy resident capstone exercise.  For the exercise component, Chaplain Nalls directed a team of Maryland Defense Force Chaplains during Operation Vigilant Guard. a joint exercise to improve command and control and operational relationships with internal military and external civilian and military partners against homeland security threats. Vigilant Guard 2010 included a scenario in which an explosion collapses part of a chemical production facility causing mass casualties and trapping numerous personnel in the building.   MDDF Chaplains provided spiritual support in the scenario, as well as real time religious support to participants including conducting religious services.

Chaplain Nalls, a recipient of the Maryland Distinguished Service Cross, the state military department’s highest award, recently became Division Chaplain for the Virginia Defense Force in February 2011.  He serves as rector of Saint Alban’s Anglican-Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia.  Chaplain Nalls and his family are residents of Ginter Park in Richmond’s North Side.

The Last Jump

A Lectio Coram in Progress

Well, it’s on.  My lectio coram, the last jump for the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL), is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18th at 3:30 p.m.  The lecture will be in the area of dogmatic theology, and the title of the lecture is “Conversion in Four Movements: Some Observations on Grace and Conversion.”  It has been a great 11 years on and off at Dominican House of Studies and the Pontifical Faculty.  But, now the ball is now on the five yard line.  As the Spartans were wont to say, Wednesday I’ll be home carrying my shield or on it!

Thanks to all for your  encouragement, support and prayers, and a special thank you to Elizabeth and Laura who have so patiently endured their twelve-o’clock scholar.

“Grace is nothing else than a kind of beginning of glory in us.”-St. Thomas Aquinas (Theologian, Doctor of the Church and Saint)

“The truth surely is that there is nothing sinful in wishing to achieve beatitude, but only in trying to achieve it otherwise than as God has willed.”-Eric L. Mascall (Anglican Theologian and Possible Saint)

Ordinations

On May 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m, God willing, there will be a Mass for the ordination of Saint Alban’s own Dcn. Robert McMillion to the sacred order of the priesthood with The Rt. Rev. William McClean celebrating. As well, Mr. Jeffrey Johnson will be ordained to the diaconate. Please offer prayers and intentions for these newest ordinands.

For those who are to be admitted into Holy Orders.

To be used in the Weeks preceding the stated Times of Ordination.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who hast purchased to thyself an universal Church by the precious blood of thy dear Son; Mercifully look upon the same, and at this time so guide and govern the minds of thy servants the Bishops and Pastors of thy flock, that they may lay hands suddenly on no man, but faithfully and wisely make choice of fit persons, to serve in the sacred Ministry of thy Church, And to those who shall be ordained to any holy function, give thy grace and heavenly benediction; that both by their life and doctrine they may show forth thy glory, and set forward the salvation of all men; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this.

ALMIGHTY God, the giver of all good gifts, who of thy divine providence hast appointed divers Orders in thy Church; Give thy grace, we humbly beseech thee, to all those who are to be called to any office and administration in the same; and so replenish them with the truth of thy doctrine, and endue them with innocency of life, that they may faithfully serve before thee, to the glory of thy great Name, and the benefit of thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parish Spring Fair

Come join the Saint Alban’s family for food, fun and our plant and book sale.  As well, our local neighborhood association will join us to offer jumble sale items.  This will be a great opportunity to meet folks from the area surrounding the parish.  Prayers for clement weather will be most welcome!

For Fair Weather.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech thee, of thy great goodness, to restrain those immoderate rains, wherewith thou hast afflicted us. And we pray thee to send us such seasonable weather, that the earth may, in due time, yield her increase for our use and benefit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
